JPJ office hours — PSV registration, renewal & counter times

Turning up at the wrong hour — or the wrong kind of counter — is the easiest way to lose a day in the PSV process. JPJ runs three kinds of counters in Malaysia, and they keep different hours. Here is how each one works, and which one you need for each PSV task.

1. JPJ state & branch offices — for new PSV registration

RegionWorking daysCounter hoursBreaks
Most states & federal territories (KL, Selangor, Penang, Perak, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Perlis, Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan)Monday – Friday8:00am – 5:00pmLunch 1:00–2:00pm · Friday prayers 12:15–2:45pm (shorter Friday break in Sabah/Sarawak, around 11:30am–2:00pm)
Kedah, Kelantan & TerengganuSunday – Thursday (weekend is Friday–Saturday)8:00am – 5:00pmLunch 1:00–2:00pm · Thursday midday break as posted locally
JohorMonday – Friday8:00am – 5:00pmJohor moved to a Saturday–Sunday weekend on 1 January 2025 — older pages still show the old Friday–Saturday weekend

All JPJ offices close on public holidays — federal holidays plus your state’s own holidays, which differ. Hours can change for Ramadan, special operations and system maintenance days; JPJ announces changes on its portal and social media. When a PSV deadline matters, confirm the day’s hours on jpj.gov.my before travelling.

2. JPJ counters at UTC — longer hours, but NOT for new PSV

Urban Transformation Centres (UTC) were built for after-work government errands, and their JPJ counters keep much longer hours — commonly 8:00am to 9:00pm on weekdays at large UTCs (for example Melaka, Perak-Ipoh, Pahang-Kuantan and Penang Sentral), 8:00am to 5:00pm or 6:00pm at others (Shah Alam, Pudu Sentral KL), and weekend hours typically 8:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. Friday counters pause for the prayer break (12:15–2:45pm). Exact hours differ by UTC — check your UTC’s page before going.

The rule that catches people out: UTC JPJ counters handle renewals and many everyday transactions, but they do not process new PSV licence registration. First registration must be at a JPJ state or branch office, in the same state as your course. PSV renewals can be done at JPJ counters including UTC locations.

3. Other hours you will need

PlaceTypical hoursNotes
Driving institutes (PSV course)Offices usually 8:00am–5:00pm; courses start in the morning, often 8:00–9:00amThe 6-hour course usually runs as one full day with breaks. Book ahead — you cannot walk in and start at noon
Clinics (JPJL8A medical)Private clinics: often 8:00am–10:00pm, some 24 hoursThe medical takes under an hour. Ask for the JPJL8A vocational medical when you register at the clinic desk
PUSPAKOM inspection centresGenerally weekday working hours; selected centres open SaturdayBook inspections in advance (MyPUSPAKOM) — walk-in queues are long at month-end
MyJPJ app / JPJ portal24 hoursSummons checks, licence information and many private-vehicle transactions — but vocational counter transactions still need a counter visit

Best times to go — from drivers who queue often

  • Arrive before 8:30am for registration counters — the first hour is the fastest of the day
  • Avoid Mondays and the day after a public holiday — every office feels the backlog
  • Avoid the last week of the month for anything vehicle-related — road tax expiries flood the counters
  • In weekend states (Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu), Sunday morning is your “Monday” — plan accordingly
  • Take a number, keep your documents in order, and check the class printed on your licence before you leave the counter
