PSV licence for Grab drivers in Malaysia
Grab is Malaysia’s largest e-hailing platform, and every GrabCar driver-partner must hold a PSV licence — no PSV, no activation. This page covers the Grab-specific route: what Grab requires, where its driver centres help, how reimbursement schemes have worked, and what happens after your PSV is issued. Independent guide — not affiliated with Grab; Grab’s own offers and steps change, so treat your Grab app and Grab’s driver pages as the final word.
What Grab requires from you
- Malaysian citizen, 21 or older
- CDL class D/DA valid for more than 1 year
- PSV licence (e-hailing class) — this page is about getting it
- No JPJ/PDRM blacklist; summonses cleared before PSV training
- A car no more than 15 years old, with EVP, e-hailing insurance and PUSPAKOM inspections as they fall due
The Grab route to a PSV, step by step
Register interest in the Grab app / driver portal
Grab’s driver onboarding points you to its PSV flow and any current subsidised programme in your city.
Print the JPJL8A form and do the medical
Grab’s own guidance starts here: download the JPJ L8A form, take it to any clinic and ask for the PSV medical check-up. Some Grab Driver Centres (GDC) have offered the check-up on site. The result is valid for one year.
Attend the 6-hour PSV training
Either through Grab’s training portal / Kampus Rakan Grab sessions or at any JPJ-registered driving institute near you. Bring MyKad, your CDL and the L8A form. You leave with the JPJL2C certificate (valid one year).
Register the PSV at JPJ
At a JPJ state or branch office in the same state as your training — not a UTC counter. Bring MyKad and CDL (originals + copies), the JPJL8A with clinic receipt, the JPJL2C certificate and a photo. Some institutes handle registration for their students — ask yours.
Submit your PSV to Grab and finish activation
Upload the licence in the app, complete the vehicle side (EVP is arranged with the operator), and keep your documents current in the app — Grab suspends accounts on expired documents automatically.
About Grab’s PSV cost help
Grab has repeatedly run schemes that cut the driver’s cost: reimbursing PSV costs (historically up to around RM100–RM300 depending on the programme and period), and special low-fee course packages at selected Grab Driver Centres — at times advertised at RM50 including the 6-hour course, with reimbursement after completing a set number of trips (for example 30 trips within 30 days of activation) in cities such as Petaling Jaya, Ipoh, Penang, Melaka and Johor Bahru. These offers are time-limited and city-specific. Before paying full price anywhere, check the current offer inside your Grab driver app — it takes two minutes and can save you most of the cost. The full independent cost picture is on the cost page.
Prepare while you wait
Course slots and JPJ queues mean most drivers wait days between steps. Use them: the free practice test covers the course syllabus, and Grab’s own onboarding goes smoother when the road-law material is already familiar.
