PSV test & licence — frequently asked questions
Straight answers about the Malaysia PSV test, the 6-hour course, licence costs, renewal and e-hailing rules. If your question is about a live application, JPJ’s official site is the final word.
Is there still a written PSV exam in Malaysia?
For most new taxi, kereta sewa and e-hailing applicants, the old written PSV examination has been abolished by the Ministry of Transport. Today you qualify by attending the full 6-hour PSV theory course at a JPJ-registered driving institute. Some institutes still run an end-of-course assessment, and rules can differ by category, so practising real PSV test questions is still the best way to walk in prepared — and to actually learn the road law you will be judged on as a professional driver.
How many questions are in the PSV practice test here?
Our full mock draws 40 questions at random from a bank of 50+ original practice questions covering PSV licence law, road signs, passenger safety, defensive driving, vehicle checks and Malaysian road law. The pass level is set at 80% — the same standard the old official exam used (48 out of 60).
How much does a PSV licence cost in Malaysia?
Budget roughly RM150–RM280 in total: the 6-hour course costs RM70–RM200 (the fee is capped at RM200), the JPJL8A medical check at a clinic is typically around RM50, and JPJ charges a small processing fee (about RM30). Prices vary by institute and clinic, so confirm before you book.
Who needs a PSV licence?
Anyone who carries paying passengers in Malaysia: taxi and kereta sewa drivers, e-hailing drivers (Grab, Bolt, inDrive, Maxim and others), van and mini-bus drivers, and bus drivers. Each vehicle class has its own PSV class — see the licence classes page.
Can I get a PSV licence on a P licence?
No. You need a full Competent Driving Licence (CDL), class D or DA, that has been valid for more than one year, and you must be at least 21 years old.
Do I need to pass a written PSV exam?
Under current Ministry of Transport rules, the traditional written PSV examination for taxi, kereta sewa, e-hailing and GDL applicants has been abolished. Attendance at the full 6-hour PSV theory course is the qualifying step. Some driving institutes run an internal assessment at the end of the course, and special categories (for example OKU applicants sitting a JPJ-conducted exam) may still be tested, so arrive prepared either way.
How long does the whole PSV process take?
Most people finish in one to two weeks: the medical takes under an hour, the course is a single 6-hour day, and JPJ registration is a counter visit — usually the same day if your documents are complete and you go to the right office (not a UTC counter).
Can foreigners get a PSV licence?
Vocational licences are for Malaysian citizens and permanent residents. You also need a Malaysian CDL — a foreign licence or an international driving permit does not qualify you for PSV.
Which JPJ office should I register at?
Register at a JPJ state or branch office in the same state where you attended your PSV course. JPJ counters inside Urban Transformation Centres (UTCs) do not process PSV registration.
How do I renew my PSV licence?
Each year: pass a fresh JPJL8A medical examination at a clinic, take the completed form to a JPJ counter with your CDL, and pay the one-year renewal fee (RM20, excluding adjustments). Do not let it lapse — after 3 years expired, JPJ can make you redo the process.
What is the difference between PSV and GDL?
PSV (Public Service Vehicle) is the vocational licence for carrying paying passengers. GDL (Goods Driving Licence) is the vocational licence for carrying goods commercially. Taxi, e-hailing, van-passenger and bus drivers need PSV; lorry and goods-van drivers need GDL.
What is an EVP and do I need one as well as PSV?
Yes, for e-hailing. PSV licences you, the driver. The EVP (E-hailing Vehicle Permit) permits your car. It is arranged through your e-hailing operator under APAD, and your car must also show the e-hailing sticker, hold e-hailing insurance and pass PUSPAKOM inspections when due.
What topics does the PSV course cover?
Road safety and the Road Transport Act 1987, traffic signs and rules, the KEJARA demerit system, passenger handling and service standards, defensive driving, basic vehicle checks and emergency response — the same topics as the practice questions on this site.
In what language is the PSV course taught?
Courses are normally taught in Bahasa Melayu, and many institutes in larger cities can explain material in English as well. Ask when you book if language is a concern.
Are the questions on this site the real JPJ exam questions?
No — and be careful of any site claiming to sell real papers. These are original practice questions written around the official PSV course syllabus, which is the honest way to prepare: the rules and situations are real, the wording is ours.
Is this site run by JPJ?
No. PSV Test Questions is an independent practice site. For official rules, fees and the full list of registered institutes, use jpj.gov.my and mot.gov.my — links are in the footer of every page.
What time do JPJ offices open for PSV matters?
JPJ state and branch offices generally open Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, closing for lunch (1:00–2:00pm) and the Friday prayer break (12:15–2:45pm). In Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu the week runs Sunday to Thursday. Go early — PSV counters are busiest in the first hour and after lunch. Full breakdown on the JPJ office hours page.
My PSV card is lost. Do I have to redo the course?
No. A lost card is a records matter, not a re-test: apply for a replacement at a JPJ counter with your MyKad (and a police report if it was stolen). A replacement fee applies. You only face the course again if the licence itself has been expired for over 3 years.
What does the JPJL8A medical actually check?
A general fitness assessment for carrying passengers: your declared health history and medication, eyesight and colour vision, hearing, blood pressure and a physical examination. If the doctor finds something that needs a closer look, you may be referred for a specialist opinion rather than failed on the spot. See the JPJL8A medical guide.
Can I do the PSV course in another state and register in mine?
JPJ registration is done in the same state where you attended the course. If you live near a state border, pick the institute and the JPJ office as a pair — course in State A means registering in State A.
How much does PSV renewal cost each year?
Budget for the JPJ renewal fee (RM20 for one year) plus a fresh JPJL8A medical each time (typically around RM50 at a clinic). Allow roughly RM70–90 a year, plus your time. The renewal calculator on this site tells you when your renewal window opens.
